Common Myths and Misconceptions of Keeping an Aquarium
A lot of people think setting up an aquarium is easy. For some, all it takes to set up an aquarium is to buy a tank, fill it up with water and decorations, and put some fish on it.
This, however, is just one of the numerous misconceptions and myths in keeping an aquarium. And guess what? We are going to address these common fishkeeping myths and misconceptions.
Myth 1: You do not have to use a filter
Do not let some of those so-called aquarium experts online deceive you! Some of these people would say filtration systems are just a gimmick schemed by pet stores to earn a few extra bucks.
In reality, fish need filters to survive in captivity. Keep in mind that your pets are practically living and swimming in their waste. So, you need to keep the water of your fish tank as clean and spotless as possible to prevent any health problem.
And, a functional filter can help you achieve a clean and healthy aquarium environment by converting your fish’s waste (ammonia) into less toxic elements.
There are endless options available, as far as fish tank filters. Check out our website to gain more knowledge about this crucial aquarium equipment.
Myth 2: Fish may live eating our food
Contrary to popular belief, domestic fish cannot survive eating human food. Let us face it, fish are very different from humans.
While people efficiently use carbohydrates for energy, fish generally cannot put it into good use.
Not only are their digestive systems different from the ones in humans, but they also mostly need protein and fat.
So, avoid feeding your fish rice, bread, or anything from your regular diet. Except for koi and other fish species, these aquatic creatures will not survive eating human food.
That is why you need to buy a scientifically formulated commercial fish food.
It is quite useful, and it lasts for months too.
Myth 3: Fishbowls make a healthy environment
Even though a lot of pet shops sell fish bowls, these outdated options just do not make sense from an aquarist’s standpoint. The truth is, glass bowls do not create a safe and comfy place for fish.
They cannot hold a great deal of water and are small compared to today’s aquariums.
Moreover, their surface area for water is smaller than their volume. And, it is vital to have a bigger surface of the water since it makes the exchange of gas more efficient.
Despite living underwater, fish still need plenty of oxygen. Like humans, they will suffocate and die without oxygen.
Myth 4: Keeping a Goldfish is easy
Goldfish may be a common and popular aquarium pet, but they are, by no means, easy to maintain.
These fish are delicate and have higher demands and needs when it comes to aquarium size, filter power, and maintenance.
For starters, you need at least a 40-gallon aquarium for a goldfish to survive and flourish. Moreover, you need a minimum of 55 gallons of water to support 2 regular goldfish.
Fancy goldfish types also require a 30-gallon tank for 2 and a 20-gallon aquarium for one.
Goldfish also tend to grow so much bigger than other species of fish. They poop and eat quite often, meaning you certainly need a more prolific filter. And, did we mention that you need to maintain their aquarium more frequently to keep it in tip-top condition?
Myth 5: Fish have a short life span
Some fish owners, especially the newbies, think that their pets have a short life span. They even find it a milestone or an achievement when their fish live for around 3 years.
But, the truth is, fish, with proper care and maintenance, can live 5 years, at least.
A goldfish may even live for about 20 years.
Of course, some fish species have shorter life spans, like killifish and Siamese fighting fish, which live up to 3 years.
Myth 6: You can put different kinds of fish in one aquarium
Just because they have the same water type (whether freshwater or saltwater), it does not mean you can combine different fish species in one community aquarium.
Fish compatibility is crucial, and if taken rather lightly, can lead to your fish’s death.
So, do your homework and research on fish compatibility and their behavior before you put a bunch of different fish in one community tank.
Myth 7: You should replace your aquarium’s water every day
No matter what you do, the water in your aquarium will eventually get dirty. Remember, fish eat and excrete in one environment.
For the most part, the dirt inside the tank is made up of invisible waste byproducts, unconsumed food bits, and waste in the form of nitrates and phosphates.
An untidy tank can make your fish susceptible to a variety of diseases and may even sicken them.
Even so, you should not change your aquarium water every day. When you suddenly replace all the water in your aquarium, it will likely cause a dramatic shift in water chemistry.
This, in turn, will definitely make it difficult for the fish to acclimate to the new water makeup and even lead to stress.
So, do not replace your aquarium water daily. Instead, replace the water with about 10 to 15% every week.
Trust us, it is the best and most effective way to let your fish slowly and safely adapt to the water chemistry of your aquarium.
Myth 8: Feed your aquatic pets several times daily
Overfeeding is definitely one of the primary causes of death for finned pets. Fish, unlike humans, are not capable of regulating their body’s temperature.
Plus, they do not need a great deal of energy to survive. The thing is, fish can live and survive with only one meal per day or even every few days.
When feeding fish, less is better.
Overfeeding our pet increases the risk of having digestive problems that can cause death. Likewise, excess fish food pollutes the water as well as creates a whole lot of ammonia.
Myth 9: You can buy fish and put it to your aquarium whenever you want
You just cannot buy a fish from a pet shop, put it directly to your aquarium, and expect it to live for years.
You need to create a healthy and suitable aquatic environment before you can bring fish home. Take note that these creatures need a well-established and healthy fish tank.
Myth 10: All you need is a catfish to keep an aquarium spotlessly clean
Actually, there is some truth and reality to this idea. Catfish, in general, are scavengers that consume leftover food from other fish.
Even better, certain species of catfish eat algae on the glass and ornaments of your tank, which can make your job a bit easier.
Catfish, however, do not eat the waste of other fish and aquarium inhabitants. And, that means you still need to buy a filtration system, and clean your aquarium frequently, even if you have plenty of catfish in your aquarium.
